As a renewable energy analyst born and raised in the Sunshine State, I‘ve run the numbers on how Florida homeowners can squeeze maximum savings out of going solar. Electricity rates here have no mercy, averaging 12¢ per kilowatt-hour versus 11¢ nationwide. Meanwhile we bask in the glow of ample sun, with Florida‘s solar potential trailing only Arizona and Nevada.
Seems like a perfect match to harness all those free photons flooding down while minimizing that dreadful summer power bill. Only catch is the state offers barely any incentives compared to western counterparts like sunny California. But all is not lost! When leveraged fully, federal and local solar policies can still add up to major savings for Floridians.
In this guide, I‘ll equip you with insider knowledge to capitalize on every available rebate, tax credit, and bill offset opportunity when going solar in Florida. You stand to pocket thousands in tax savings while securing cheaper, more predictable power costs for decades to come by making your roof work for you.
Let‘s uncover everything Florida has to offer for doing solar affordably.
Scoring a 30% Discount from Uncle Sam
The headliner when talking solar savings in Florida is undoubtedly the big kahuna federal tax credit. Officially dubbed the investment tax credit or ITC, this policy gifts homeowners a whopping 30% back as a credit on their IRS tax bill for installing solar.
On a typical 6 kW array running around $15,480 before incentives in Florida, you‘d score a $4,644 tax credit. Not bad for a little sun! Best part is the credit applies to more than just the physical solar panels. It also includes critical components like inverters, mounting hardware, wiring, plus even permitting and sales tax costs.
To guarantee you capture the full 30% credit being offered from now through December 2023, you must own your Florida solar system outright rather than leasing. While buying requires more upfront capital, leases forfeit this sizable tax incentive along with other ownership perks I‘ll expand on later.
For a sense of scale, that 30% ITC chopping nearly $5k off your taxes rivals what many states offer in outright cash incentives. And Uncle Sam doesn‘t miss a deadline like depleted state solar rebate funds. You can bank on the tax credit plus it actually INCREASES the value of excess energy sold back to the grid.
My advice? Get solar installed before New Year‘s 2024 to snag the full 30% while you still can. This sunniest of federal solar incentives starts sinking after that.
Net Metering: Your Utility Pays You Back
Beyond the tax credit, Florida homeowners go solar to capitalize on net metering. This policy requires your utility company to hand you bill credits when your panels generate more electricity than your house uses.
Say your system produces 30 kilowatt-hours but you only use 20. The remaining 10 get fed into the grid and your meter spins backwards. Through net metering, the utility essentially buys that excess power from you at full retail electricity rates.
Depending on your solar array size and household consumption, the bill credits really add up. Over a year, net metering could have your $1500+ annual electricity bill down to just a couple hundred bucks. Maybe even zero it out entirely.
Exact savings depend on your utility‘s net metering rate and compensation structure. Generally you‘ll earn credits to offset future charges. But Duke Energy offers actual cash back for surplus generation at the end of an annual cycle. Run the numbers for your provider and usage to maximize value.
And while utilities must offer net metering today, there‘s no guarantee of policy longevity. Fatter margins for them would come from reducing credit rates or tacking on solar fees in the future. So move sooner than later to lock in savings from what I consider the second-best solar perk beyond the temporary federal tax credit bonanza.
Slash Sales Tax, Keep Property Tax Put
Chipping in a bit more, Florida at least spares solar customers from seeing their property tax and sales tax bills creep up. Install panels and your home value undoubtedly rises while adding to property taxes almost everywhere else. But the Sunshine State provides a full property tax exemption for solar systems. That spares you thousands in extra taxes across decades of home ownership.
On the sales tax front, 100% of charges get waived when purchasing solar equipment to power your home rather than a business. With today‘s solar panel costs averaging $2.58 per Watt in Florida, buyers dodge over $1,000 in sales tax on a typical 6,000 Watt (6 kW) residential system.
Combine no property tax hit with zero sales tax and the state exemptions deliver a small but important couple extra points of savings on top of Uncle Sam‘s heavy lifting.
I‘ll spare you more numbers, but the visual below sums up the tax exemptions well. Green is cash back in your wallet.

I won‘t sugar coat the lack of statewide rebates or incentives in Florida. Blame an absence of ambitious renewable energy goals thanks to utility industry influence. But pockets of progress exist. Forward-thinking municipalities have enacted solar programs for locals that can add up to significant savings beyond federal and state help.
For instance, the Orlando Utilities Commission runs the nation‘s 6th largest municipal solar program and leads Florida‘s pack by a long shot. Local customers installing solar get over $20,000 back through a combination of cash rebates plus ongoing payments for energy generated.
At over $0.05 per kilowatt-hour produced, Orlando‘s Solar Feed-in Tariff pays better than anywhere nationwide beyond parts of California and Massachusetts. Modeling out the 30% federal tax credit, $20k local rebate and 10-15 years of production payments, Orlando homeowners break even on solar panel investment in a lightning fast 5-7 years. Plus lock in ultra low energy costs for decades after payback.
Gainesville, Tallahassee, Clay County, and even the environmentally-conscious Florida Keys also offer solar rebates worth investigating locally:

Now let‘s examine whether to buy outright or lease panels to optimize your position.
To Own or Lease Solar? Running the Numbers
When weighing solar in Florida, homeowners mainly fall into two camps:
- Buying and owning panels outright
- Leasing a solar array from a provider
Newer leasing models seem attractive. Little to no money down through a long-term contract in exchange for discounted solar power. But the option risks major lost savings compared to owning your system.
Most significantly, leased solar forfeits eligibility for claiming the 30% federal tax credit which could save $4,500+ at today‘s system costs. Leasing also reduces value from net metering exports and provides zero long-term ownership equity as you rent rather than buy the panels on your own roof.
Modeling out total 25-year costs and savings as shown below, buying solar panels outright saves Florida homeowners over $27,000 compared to just $9,600 via leasing. With buying, you also own an asset that boosts property value as selling solar homes earns a premium.

But when crunching the numbers, buying is clearly the superior path to maximize savings from every Florida solar incentive.
……………………..
In closing, I hope mapping out the lay of the land on subsidies, credits, exemptions, and bill reductions paints a picture that solar absolutely pencils out financially in the Sunshine State. Expect outstanding long-term returns from panels even if Tallahassee keeps environmental programs out of sight.
