JavaScript has taken over the world – powering over 97% of all websites online and running on billions of devices globally! 🤯

But where did it all begin? How did JS evolve from humble origins as a "LiveScript" prototype inside Netscape to the world beating web development juggernaut it is today?

The Origin Story: Filling the Need for Rich Interactivity

The year was 1995. The "browser wars" were heating up. Netscape Navigator was battling Microsoft‘s Internet Explorer for share of the fledgling web browser market.

"Back then the web felt so…static. We needed a way for developers to make pages more lively and responsive" reminisces Brendan Eich, the founder of JavaScript.

So Marc Andreessen, founder of Netscape, assigned a special mission to engineer Brendan Eich – come up with a lightweight scripting language that can help enhance web interactivity within a week!

Eich managed to deliver an initial prototype he named LiveScript in just 10 days by taking concepts from existing languages like Scheme, Python & Java.

"We wanted elements in a page to come alive reacting to user input." Andreessen said about his vision for adding client-side scripting.

LiveScript offered exactly that capability to developers. However Netscape decided to rename it to JavaScript in a marketing move trying to capitalize on Java‘s popularity in 1995.

And the rest as they say is history! JavaScript took off like wildfire, spreading to millions of early webpages as Netscape Navigator usage surged. The "browser wars" were eventually won by Microsoft IE. But JavaScript emerged as the real winner that outlived and outgrew them all!

Fun fact: Eich later co-founded the Mozilla Project that gave birth to the wildly popular Firefox browser.
