Shall we dive in?

Overview of GoldenEye 007

For newcomers, here‘s a quick primer on the seminal 1997 FPS we‘re investigating today.

The Game:

GoldenEye 007 (GE007) brought the 1995 James Bond film of the same name to the Nintendo 64 console. Players control Bond through 18 missions spanning weapon bases, jungle outposts, and more objectives across the globe.

With over 20 distinct guns and gadgets, 3 adjustable difficulties, and even 4-player local multiplayer, GE007 delivered a landmark shooter experience back in its heyday.

The Sport:

Today, GE007 enjoys a passionate speedrunning community chasing ever-quicker completion times across the campaign‘s varied challenges.

Thanks to its lack of RNG elements and predictable AI, the game offers immense room for strategy and optimization. Players utilize unconventional tricks and re-imagined routes to shatter preconceived performance barriers.

Now, onto the icons who redefined what once seemed impossible in this beloved N64 title according to our guide Karl…

Bronze Medalist: The Mysterious Wouter Jansen

Our tour starts in the late 1990s with the arrival of perhaps speedrunning‘s first-ever hidden legend: Wouter Jansen of the Netherlands.

In September 2000, a post emerged on the leading GoldenEye 007 speedrunning forum claiming a complete unknown held 35 untouchable world records – including an supposed 16 minute Facility run that destroyed the standing mark by over 3 minutes.

This understandably prompted accusations of fakery. However, once Jansen verified his feats on camera, the shocked community had to force a new world order almost overnight.

By December 2000, Jansen‘s name entered the international GoldenEye archives. Just 3 months later in February 2001, he captured the overall World Champion crown.

So how did Jansen acquire such profound skills without anyone noticing?

Playing Against Ghosts: Jansen‘s Origin Story

Prior to widespread internet access, Jansen honed his relentless GoldenEye grind in isolation without ever realizing speedrun competitions existed at the elite level.

"From 1999 to 2000, I pretty much played GoldenEye 007 every single day for at least eight hours a day" – Wouter Jansen

Lacking multiplayer capacity on his retail cartridge, Jansen instead spent those long hours battling against preset "ghost" replay times saved by the game.

Constantly attempting to edge out these ghosts drove Jansen‘s technique and precision to elevate beyond any human competitor at the time. He adopted a scientific mindset no other contemporary player matched – cataloguing exact stats on optimal paths, enemy placements, and weapon behaviors until the data crystallized into irrefutable world record pace strategy.

By the numbers:

  • 35 Untouched world records initially claimed
  • 172 Total records set between 2000-2005
  • 16 Minutes, 5 Seconds – Jansen‘s legendary Facility run on Secret Agent

Jansen dominated the game at its highest levels by fully utilizing idiosyncrasies and intricacies that casual fans wouldn‘t even perceive. He didn‘t just claim records – he redefined fundamental approaches to GoldenEye altogether.

Jansen‘s Legacy: Pushing Limits & Longevity

While rival speedrunners ultimately surpassed many of Jansen‘s grandest benchmarks over the following years, many of his insights remain integral to top GoldenEye play even today.

And to this day, not one challenger has matched perhaps Jansen‘s most astonishing overall achievement:

His Agent difficulty run of 0:27 in the cargo ship level Frigate which stood untouched from October 2005 until July 2021 – a near 16 year reign that easily ranks as one of speedrunning‘s most untouchable records ever witnessed.

Silver Medalist: Child Prodigy Rayan Isran

What if you were told the world‘s #2 ranked GoldenEye speedrunner became elite while most kids were still learning basic multiplication tables?

Unfathomably, that‘s the case for silver tour guide medalist Rayan Isran – who started competing at just 10 years old back in 2003.

Isran‘s talents were evident early on thanks to his mastery of the beloved Rare FPS Perfect Dark. But Goldeneye initially seemed beyond the prodigy‘s grasp when he lacked the ideal hardware to compete.

Overcoming the PAL Disadvantage

You see, Isran only had access to the European PAL Nintendo 64 system rather than North America‘s NTSC standard.

This proved problematic since PAL‘s higher resolution came at the cost of a lower framerate compared to NTSC consoles. With less information processing per second, PAL injected more input delay and chugged noticeably during GoldenEye‘s hectic firefights.

Yet incredibly, pre-teen Isran still hung with adult NTSC runners despite playing on hard mode. He silenced accusations of cheating after uploading footage capturing his prowess across Perfect Dark and GoldenEye.

His talent outshone any hardware limitations – for a time anyways.

Isran‘s Key Early Achievements on PAL Hardware:

  • 33rd worldwide rank in GoldenEye by 2005
  • Top worldwide rank in Perfect Dark by age 11
  • Completed legendary Train speedrun 4 seconds quicker than any peer.

Once Isran got his hands on the faster NTSC ROM in 2008 however, histrue reign of dominance began…

Becoming the True King of GoldenEye 007

Over a staggering six year stretch starting in 2008, Isran won multiple World Champion titles while breaking nearly 170 world records.

Demonstrating inhuman consistency and nerve, Isran rattled off personal best performances on legendary stages like Facility and Train considered untouchable for their hyper-demanding precision requirements under fire.

Disconnect your controller for even a nanosecond and you can kiss your world record pace goodbye.

Yet Isran constantly exceeded perceived peak potential for Goldeneye‘s toughest gauntlets thanks to preternatural movement and instinct. Gamers half Isran‘s age lacked the reaction time and attention to detail needed to survive True GoldenEye mastery.

Isran‘s Key Achievements Post-NTSC:

  • 2008: Shatters 6-year-old Jungle record by 4 whole seconds
  • 2013: Obliterates Facility‘s Secret Agent barrier by 45 seconds
  • 2016: Conquers Aztec Agent in 1 minute 25 seconds
  • 2017: GoldenEye World Champion for unbelievable 2,000+ consecutive days

Most astoundingly, Isran owns the longest surviving world record ever witnessed in GE007 history…

The Record That Can‘t Be Broken: Jungle Secret Agent

Among his myriad innovations, one feat stands eternal:

Isran‘s 2008 run of 1:35 through GoldenEye‘s windy valley stage Jungle on Secret Agent difficulty remained the undisputed world record nearly 15 years and counting until writing this.

No one has come within a single second of touching Isran‘s virtuoso run of slipping and sliding down the stage‘s treacherous slopes while dodging snipers and traps for over 5,200 straight days and counting.

Records fall all the time across games – but Jungle Secret Agent appears virtually immortal thanks to Isran‘s transcendent talent hitting an apex possibly no future runner can eclipse even with years more attempts.

Gold Medalist: Bryan "BryReloaded" Bosshardt

But the G.O.A.T. according to our guide Karl stands as the legendary innovator Bryan "BryReloaded" Bosshardt from the United States.

While the previous two medalists overwhelmed through sheer mechanical excellence, Karl and many peers believe Bosshardt claims #1 Greatest GoldenEye Speedrunner status for literally changing how gamers perceive playing the game itself.

Back in 2002, the then little-known figure "BryReloaded" joined the GE007 ranks without initially putting up eye-popping numbers.

Rather, he made waves early on by discovering and popularizing techniques literally no peer thought applicable for realistic speedrunning attempts beforehand.

Pioneering the Art of Sequence Breaking

Modern gamers understand sequence breaking as utilizing unintended shortcuts or tricks to bypass intended paths for quicker completion times.

Yet back in the early 2000s, actively seeking these exploits rather than pure skill saw as literally cheating among most gamer circles.

Bosshardt shattered these taboos after sharing a consistent method for tricking Goldeneye guards into opening doors far quicker than the developers ever intended.

He then leveraged similar boundary-breaking knowledge to seize the World Record throne in 2003 and introduce sequence breaking definitively into the mainstream speedrunning consciousness.

Bosshardt‘s Early Sequence Breaking Milestones:

  • Analyzes and publishes reliable Aztec door skip glitch
  • Discovers unreal 16 second run for Archives on Agent
  • Cuts 4 seconds off Train by using mine boosts skips
  • Develops "Baton Pass" strategy for multi-player races

When radical new glitches emerged, Bosshardt constantly incorporated tricks no peers would dare risk in serious completions against just his second day mastering the technique. His ingenuity and sheer audacity to always push past perceived limits took skill ceilings to once unfathomable heights.

No Strategy Too "Stupid"

While other elites relied on polished reliability earned through thousand hour sessions, Bosshardt followed no playstyle orthodoxy in chasing the impossible.

Karl Jobst recalls how Bryan adopted a "try anything no matter how stupid" approach where any perceivable trick – no matter how unlikely to pull off – became worth attempting if it had the slightest chance to lower his record by even a quarter second.

This resonated across the speedrunning scene by presenting two valuable lessons:

  1. Think Outside the Box – Just because a route seems too unorthodox doesn‘t mean it shouldn‘t be tested to set new standards.

  2. Adapt or Fall Behind – Speedrunning greatness requires constantly expanding your knowledge and toolset to beat the competition.

Bosshardt‘s Later Career Achievements:

  • Develops and masters "straferunning" movement technique
  • Posts Absolute Barrier video explaining key concepts
  • Remains fixture among the global Top 10 rankings

Bryan Bosshardt‘s legacy lives on today through the wealth of strategies and exploitative knowledge he unearthed across hundreds of hours testing perceived impossibilities. He set the expectation that mastering GoldenEye requires just as much critical thinking as quick thumbs.

Without his outside-the-box imagination, the quest to push split times downward might have stalled ages ago. The community at large owes much to the Bossman‘s brave pioneer spirit.
