Kia EV9 vs Tesla Model X: Which Electric SUV Wins?

Kia and Tesla are leading electric vehicle manufacturers, each with a highly anticipated electric SUV set to launch soon. The Kia EV9 is slated for release in late 2023 or early 2024, while the Tesla Model X received a major refresh in 2021. Both three-row SUVs promise premium comfort, technology, and performance – but which one is the better option?

Overview and Pricing

The Kia EV9 will likely be priced between $50,000-$75,000 for the base and top trims. With few three-row electric SUV options available, especially from non-luxury automakers, the EV9 aims to make the segment more accessible.

In contrast, the Tesla Model X starts at $120,000 in its cheapest configuration. Additional options like the Full Self-Driving Capability and tow hitch can push the price above $150,000. The Model X competes directly with ultra-luxury SUVs in terms of exclusivity and cutting-edge features.

Exterior Design

The boxy Kia EV9 concept reveals a rugged, capable appearance while keeping a streamlined shape for aerodynamic efficiency. It measures 190 inches long and 81 inches wide. Unique details include side skirts, triangular wheels, and "S-shaped" headlights.

Slightly smaller at 198 inches long, the Tesla Model X features a curvy, tapered profile more reminiscent of a luxury sedan than a family hauler. Futuristic doors set it apart – front doors electrically open and close with the press of a button, while rear falcon wing doors articulate upwards for easier access.

Advantage: Tesla Model X for its iconic, avant garde design.

Interior Comfort and Practicality

Inside, the Kia EV9 concept shows sustainable materials like repurposed fishing nets on the floor. The production version will likely offer seating for 6 or 7 passengers. Innovative rotating second row seats can turn to face third row passengers or the doors. The minimalist dash sports two 12.3” displays.

The Tesla Model X comes standard with seating for 5 and optional 6 or 7 passenger configurations. Heated seats, ventilated front seats, and premium leather upholstery pamper occupants. The sprawling 17” central touchscreen provides infotainment and vehicle controls. An 8” rear screen entertains second row passengers. Numerous storage cubbies and USB ports throughout increase convenience.

Advantage: Tie. Both vehicles excel at passenger space, comfort and family-friendly ergonomics. The EV9 seems geared more towards sustainability while the Model X focuses on luxury.

Performance and Range

Performance specifications remain unannounced for the Kia EV9. Based on the related EV6, dual motor configurations could produce around 400 horsepower while entry trims may use a single rear motor with 200-300 horsepower. Estimated range sits around 300 miles. 800V fast charging promises 0-80% in under 30 minutes.

The dual motor Tesla Model X in its Long Range Plus form generates 670 horsepower and 325 mile range. 0-60 mph acceleration takes just 3.8 seconds – shockingly quick for a heavy SUV. Access to Tesla‘s vast Supercharger network recharges batteries in about 30 minutes.

Advantage: Tesla Model X for its scintillating acceleration, longer range and access to proprietary fast charging infrastructure.

Autonomous Driving Technology

As a brand-new model, autonomous driving specs are still in development for the Kia EV9. However, related models like the EV6 offer a Highway Driving Assist feature that centrally positions the vehicle in its lane and maintains a set distance from other cars automatically using radar and camera data.

The Tesla Model X offers cutting-edge self-driving functionality. Autopilot allows for automated steering, acceleration and braking on highways while Full Self Driving Capability can automatically change lanes, transition interchanges, self park and more – though constant human monitoring is still required. These industry leading systems give the Tesla a huge tech advantage.

Advantage: Tesla Model X thanks to its vastly more advanced driver assistance systems.

Charging Considerations

As an 800V platform EV, the Kia EV9 will likely charge extremely rapidly at specialized high-power charging stations. Lower charging speeds can be expected from more common Level 2 AC stations. Home installation of an EV charger or 240V outlet provides overnight charging. Public EV charging station networks continue expanding worldwide.

A major advantage of Tesla ownership is access to their vast proprietary Supercharger network with over 40,000 plugs globally. Superchargers can add hundreds of miles of range in less than an hour. Lower charging speed household outlets, third party DC fast chargers and destination chargers at hotels and restaurants offer additional charging options.

Advantage: Tesla Model X due to Tesla‘s industry leading fast charging network.

Which Electric SUV is Better Overall?

The Kia EV9 and Tesla Model X take dramatically different approaches to the three row electric SUV formula. As a brand new entry from a non-luxury brand, the EV9 promises affordability in a segment dominated by premium vehicles. Early information suggests a focus on passenger space, range, and sustainable materials.

The Tesla Model X pioneered the segment as the first electric SUV built from the ground up. Its stratospheric performance, 352 mile maximum range and continual over-the-air software updates keep it on the technological bleeding edge. Superlative driving technology like Autopilot and unmatched access to Superchargers increase capability. With a far higher price tag, the Model X remains an exclusive and aspirational product.

Ultimately, choosing between the EV9 and Model X comes largely down to budget. For around half the price of a base Model X, the Kia EV9 looks to bring three row electric driving down to earth without sacrificing too much performance, range or luxury. But buyers for whom money is no object will likely be attracted to the Model X’s glittering array of customization options, regular OTA updates and excellent future-proofing that help justify its lofty six figure cost. The Model X retains its crown – for now – as the pinnacle of electric SUV Excellence, but the EV9 certainly merits consideration as an affordable alternative once production specs are finalized.
