Maybe you pictured space junk as astronauts accidently dropping tools during spacewalks. Well, nails and cameras make up only a tiny fraction our galactic garbage pile.
Space junk mainly refers to all the spent rockets, dead satellites, flakes of paint and other miscellaneous waste we‘ve discarded into orbit after decades of space exploration.
I mean, we treat the final frontier like space is our celestial trash can!
Since the Soviet Union first launched Sputnik 1 in 1957 as the initial piece of space junk, we‘ve just kept tossing more tech junk out there like interstellar litterbugs. Today our planet is surrounded by a halo of approximately 128 million pieces of debris – ranging from tiny screws to a monster two-ton metal tank.

Cruising at over 17,000 mph, something as small as fleck of paint poses catastrophic dangers to functioning spacecraft. Remember, basic physics – tiny particles pack massive force at hyper velocities.
A 1 cm nut could easily obliterate a satellite on impact!

We‘ve already seen collisions cripple working satellites before. Back in 2009 a dead Russian Cosmos-2251 satellite smashed into a U.S Iridium sat. The collision detonated them into nearly 3,000 more chunks of lethal shrapnel!

Another close call came in 2012 when a stray camera traveled within 23 meters from hitting the International Space Station.
At last count floating space debris has seriously damaged six spacecraft, while the ISS has performed 29 dicey debris dodging maneuvers!

The U.S. Space Surveillance Network utilizes a vast array of radar installations and telescopes to plot trajectories for over 27,000 pieces in orbit.
Using powerful computers and statistical models we can also estimate locations of those millions of tiny but dangerous particles up there. Advanced AI programs can predict movement and warn of potential collisions.
While major space agencies watch debris and steer clear the biggest hazards, I don‘t blame you for worrying whether anymight drop through your roof!

I kid you not – you face triple the risk of being killed by a deadly bee sting over space trash! Only one confirmed case exists of junk ever hitting a human. Back in 1997 poor Lottie Williams got bopped harmlessly on the shoulder by a 6-inch metal shard.
